Built for Volume: 30 Years of Growing a Photography Business with Candid
Thirty years can change a photography business in ways that are difficult to imagine at the beginning.
Thirty years can change a photography business in ways that are difficult to imagine at the beginning.
When Alex and Cheryl Ipiotis started Island Photography, it was a two-person operation. Today, the company specializes in graduations, school portraits, and sports photography and has spent more than three decades building its business around some of the biggest milestones in students’ and families’ lives.
Along the way, Candid Color Systems has been part of that growth.
“We have had the pleasure of working with Candid Color Systems for 30 years,” Cheryl shared. “Yes, 30 years.”
That long-standing partnership was recognized this summer when Alex and Cheryl were named Candid Color Systems Customer of the Year at the 2026 Summer Seminar in Denver.
But their story isn’t simply about longevity.
It’s about what can happen when a photography business is willing to keep learning, evolving, and finding better ways to work.
From Two People to a Growing Volume Photography Business
Alex and Cheryl founded Island Photography in 1990. On the company’s website, they describe starting humbly in their basement and growing exponentially over the decades while maintaining their commitment to photography and personal service.
When they began working with Candid, they were still figuring out where their business could go.
“We were nothing but a two-person business, had no idea what we were doing,” Cheryl recalled.
That willingness to learn became an important part of their growth.
Through the years, they expanded into markets including proms, senior groups, graduations, school photography, and sports.
“We learned how to do proms, we learned how to do senior groups, we learned how to do graduations.”
Those opportunities required more than simply taking great photographs. As volume increased, so did the need for stronger workflows, better technology, efficient production, and systems capable of supporting a growing operation.
Technology That Grows With the Business
A volume photography workflow that works for a small operation may not be enough as the business adds clients, markets, photographers, images, and orders.
That is where Alex and Cheryl say Candid continued to play an important role.
“They were immensely helpful, have been over the years developing software to make us more efficient and more profitable.”
Today, Candid combines professional lab production with software built specifically for volume photography. Its ecosystem includes tools for capture, subject identification, ecommerce, marketing, ordering, reporting, production, and fulfillment—allowing photographers to manage more of their operation within a connected workflow.
For a business like Island Photography, that relationship has evolved alongside the photography industry itself.
The technology has changed.
Customer expectations have changed.
The ways photographers sell and deliver images have changed.
But the underlying need remains the same: build a workflow capable of handling today’s business while giving you room to pursue tomorrow’s opportunities.
More Than a Lab
Professional lab production has always been a major part of Candid Color Systems, but Alex and Cheryl’s experience points to something broader.
“They’re a marketing hub and lab at the same time, absolutely a player in our business and the success of our business.”
That distinction matters.
Volume photographers aren’t simply looking for somewhere to print photographs. They need infrastructure behind their business—technology, production, fulfillment, education, support, and people who understand the challenges that come with photographing at scale.
Candid’s current platform brings professional lab fulfillment together with purpose-built volume photography software, rather than requiring photographers to piece together unrelated systems for different parts of their workflow.
For Alex and Cheryl, that relationship has lasted through multiple decades of change.
Built for What’s Next
Island Photography’s story is a reminder that building a successful volume photography company doesn’t happen with one piece of software, one great season, or one smart decision.
It happens over time.
You learn new markets. You improve your workflow. You introduce new technology. You become more efficient. You find new opportunities. And then you do it again.
More than 30 years after Alex and Cheryl started Island Photography, their own company says its philosophy is still to evolve as the photography landscape evolves.
Their advice to other photographers considering where their businesses could go next is equally straightforward:
“If you’re willing to learn and you want to grow, you’re in the right place with Candid.”
That’s what Built for Volume is all about.
Not simply handling more photographs.
Building the systems, knowledge, and partnerships that give a photography business room to grow.
